Distributed Systems

CAP, consensus, message queues, and the real problems of systems that span machines.

What you'll actually learn

A single machine either works or it doesn't — a distributed system fails in ways that don't exist on one box: a network partition splits your cluster in half, two nodes disagree about which one is in charge, a message gets delivered twice. This track builds CAP theorem and consensus (Raft-style leader election) not as trivia to recite, but as the direct, unavoidable consequence of machines that can't perfectly trust what they hear from each other.

What you'll be able to do

You'll reason through what actually happens to a real system — an order-processing queue, a leader-election cluster — when the network partitions or a node goes silent, and predict which of consistency or availability it sacrifices, because in a distributed system you don't get to keep both, and knowing which one you're giving up is the whole job.

Frequently asked

How long does Distributed Systems take to complete?

Roughly 1 hour across 6 hands-on quests — you can go at your own pace and pick up exactly where you left off.

What do I need to know before starting Distributed Systems?

You should be comfortable with High Availability: The Concepts, Databases: The Foundations first — the skill tree unlocks Distributed Systems once you've cleared those.

Is Distributed Systems free to learn?

Yes — Distributed Systems is fully available on the free tier, starting with a free first quest and no payment method required to sign up. Plus and Elite remove pacing limits but don't gate any of the Distributed Systems curriculum behind a paywall.
